Fasting Blood Sugar Levels: What the Ranges Mean

Quick answer

Fasting blood sugar levels are measured after at least 8 hours without calories. Normal is 99 mg/dL or below, prediabetes is 100 to 125, and 126 or above is in the diabetes range. One abnormal result usually needs a repeat. GLPro has published no data on how it affects fasting readings.

01The ranges

What are normal fasting blood sugar levels?

A normal fasting blood sugar level is 99 mg/dL or below. A fasting result of 100 to 125 mg/dL falls in the prediabetes range, and 126 mg/dL or above is in the diabetes range (CDC, Diabetes Testing).

Fasting means no calories for at least 8 hours before the blood draw (ADA Standards of Care 2025, Diagnosis). Water is fine. Coffee with milk or sugar is not.

These bands apply to non-pregnant adults and match the American Diabetes Association table (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis). Pregnancy uses different rules, and children are assessed differently too. Units matter as well: in the United States results are reported in mg/dL, while other countries use mmol/L.

02Diagnosis

Does one high fasting reading mean diabetes?

No, one high reading does not by itself mean diabetes. Without clear symptoms, diagnosis needs two abnormal results, from the same test or from different tests (ADA Standards of Care 2025, Diagnosis).

Many things can push a single morning number up: poor sleep, illness, stress, a late snack or a medicine. Short sleep cuts insulin sensitivity in lab studies (NIDDK, impact of poor sleep), and illness raises stress hormones that lift glucose (Mayo Clinic, lifestyle and blood sugar).

So the sensible response to one odd result is a repeat test and a talk with a clinician. Panic and quick fixes do not help.

  • Fast for a full 8 hours and note when you last ate.
  • Tell the clinic about illness, new medicines and bad nights.
  • Ask whether an A1C test should follow. The blood sugar basics guide lists those cutoffs.

03Who tests

Who should get a fasting blood sugar test?

Adults aged 35 to 70 with overweight or obesity and no symptoms should be screened, according to a national task force. Fasting glucose, A1C or a glucose tolerance test can all be used (USPSTF, prediabetes and T2D screening).

The test is simple and low cost. A nurse draws a small blood sample, usually in the morning, and the lab reports a number in mg/dL. Results often return within a day or two.

If results are normal, repeating every 3 years may be reasonable (USPSTF, prediabetes and T2D screening). People with symptoms, family history or other risks may need testing sooner. Your clinician decides.

LOW BLOOD SUGAR

Signs of a low (hypoglycemia)

  1. Shaking, sweating, hungerOften the first signs
  2. Racing heartbeat, dizzinessSit down; check if you can
  3. Irritability, trouble concentratingCan come on fast
  4. Confusion, trouble seeing or speakingTreat at once

What the test results mean

  2. Fasting glucose99 mg/dL or below normal · 100-125 prediabetes · 126 or above diabetes
  3. 2-hour glucose test139 mg/dL or below normal · 140-199 prediabetes · 200 or above diabetes
  4. A low, for many people with diabetesBelow 70 mg/dL

Emergency?A severe low (passing out or a seizure) needs glucagon and a 911 call. For a mild low, take 15 to 20 grams of fast-acting carbohydrate and recheck after 15 minutes.

Signs and steps from NIDDK and Mayo Clinic (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose) (Mayo Clinic, diabetic hypoglycemia); test cutoffs for non-pregnant adults from NIDDK and CDC (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis) (CDC, Diabetes Testing). Lows are most likely with insulin, a sulfonylurea or more than one diabetes medicine; some supplements may add to the effect (NIH ODS, Chromium) (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). Keep taking prescribed medicine.

04Supplements

Can a supplement improve fasting blood sugar levels?

There is no proof that GLPro changes fasting readings. Its front says "Supports Your Blood Sugar" on some renders and "Support Blood Sugar" on others, and no study is cited beside either line.

More broadly, the American Diabetes Association does not recommend herbs or micronutrients for blood sugar benefit (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Health Behaviors). The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says evidence is weak and inconsistent, and supplements must not replace treatment (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

A lab test gives you a number from your blood. Unlike a lab report, a front claim tells you nothing about your own number. The benefits page sets each GLPro claim beside the evidence.

Keep taking prescribed medicine.

Never stop or change a prescription before a test or because of a supplement. Tell the clinic about every product you take.

05Next step

What should you do after an abnormal fasting result?

Do not wait for symptoms. Many people with prediabetes feel fine, which is why the number matters more than how you feel.

Book a follow-up, bring your log and ask what the next test should be. Prediabetes is a warning sign, and steady changes in food, movement and sleep are the usual first steps. A pace of 1 to 2 pounds of weight change a week, if weight is a goal, is the one most likely to last (CDC, Steps for Losing Weight).

06FAQ

Fasting glucose questions, answered

Q01What is a dangerous fasting blood sugar level?

No single line fits everyone. A fasting result of 126 mg/dL or above is in the diabetes range and needs follow-up. Very high readings with symptoms need urgent care.

Q02Can coffee affect a fasting blood sugar test?

Black coffee has no calories, but many clinics advise water only. Milk and sugar break the fast. Follow the instructions your clinic gives you.

Q03How often should fasting glucose be checked?

Adults with normal results may repeat screening every 3 years if advised. Those with prediabetes or diabetes are checked more often. Your clinician sets the schedule.

Q04Does GLPro lower fasting blood sugar?

No study shows that, and none is cited. The label is unpublished. Treat the front wording as a claim and ask your clinician about your own readings.
